Hello!
Hello everyone!
So far we have learned about shot types, editing in iMovie, in
photoshop, and having multi-layer audio in iMovie (while using garage
band to supplement the built-in audio). Today you will be introduced to
your final project idea which you will finish the proposal and begin filming today, and
will finish in-class on Thursday, June 5th. It will be due at the end of
class on Thursday June 5th.
After I introduce you to the project, I'd like you to brainstorm ideas
with your group and create a shared google doc between your group
members and myself. The google doc should include the following:
Which project I have chosen:
Why:
Group members:
Snyposis of idea (5-6 sentences):
Props Needed & Setting:
Potential Conflict (3 sentences):
Second idea (3-5 sentences):
Props Needed & Setting for second idea:
Here are 2 of the inspiration videos that I showed you in class:

Hello and welcome back from Quebec! I hope that you all had a great trip. Can you believe that there is only 7 classes left! Today I'll post a calendar in the class for you to understand how all of these 7 classes will count. Also note that if you're going to be away, you'll need to catch-up. There are 2 long lunches where I will open up the lab downstairs for you to get caught up on any work that you need to finish.
Your challenge is the following:
You will film a short approx. 1 minute video of yourself doing a mundane everyday school task, i.e. walking to your locker and opening it, studying for a test, working on a computer, signing a book out of the library. At some point in the scene you will drift off into your imagination and imagine what you WISH you were doing. This will be a new clip of something much more exciting! Perhaps you are talking on the phone to your friends, playing outside in the snow, playing your favourite computer game, etc. Don't do anything that you think you would get in trouble for and you must run your idea by me before you do it-remember I'm going to see your video anyways! For this section you do not need to worry about the audio as we will be adding in on our own for this point. Then you will transition back to finishing your mundane task and wrap up your video.
Once you are finished filming your video, you can begin the editing process. Remember that in order to save your in-progress iMovie file you MUST be on your personal account. If you know that you won't finish your edits today (which I doubt any of you will) don't start it on guest.
For an FYI, here is a great clip on what you need to know about audio in iMovie. Even thought it says "basics" it is very comprehensive.

Today we are going to be editing our video clips with audio. If you used the Guest account to create your last iMovie project, then go to aristotle and open up your video again in iMovie. From there I will give you a demo on how to:
1. detach your audio
2. add in sound effects
3. ducking, etc.
4. how to edit a clip in Garage band.
While you are waiting for this tutorial I will be working with the inDesign people. Please work quitely at finishing the tutorial from last class if you are not done. If you are finished please read the article below and answer the questions on your blog.
Videography vs Cinematography
1. Before reading the article, what did you think was the difference between the two? Have you heard of both of these terms?
2. Do you agree with the opinion in this article? Why or why not?
3. To summarize, what is the difference between videography vs cinematography?
AFTER THE TUTORIAL
Please work on editing audio in your video. You must have a background sound track (that was clipped in garage band) and at least one sound effect. Think about your placement of the background track, i.e. in titles, credits, etc. You can have the rest of the class to create an audio video with your video of the doorway scene. When you are done please upload it to youtube and send me the link.

Last class was our first videography class. We watched a couple videos about matched action, jump cuts, and cut aways. Today I'd like you to upload that video onto your blog and work through the following tutorial. It is time consuming but you can have the period to work on this. The questions go chronologically for the most part.
After this you will work through the following videography tutorials at your own speed. Please click on "Editing". It might seem backwards to start with editing but it actually makes sense to work backwards with videography so you know what scenes you will need before you start shooting. You can work through the tutorial and answer the following at the end. Please watch the clips that go with the tutorial. :
Tutorial
According to the blog, what is editing?
1. What is a sequence? What order should a sequence generally follow? Why?
2. What is matched action? When should you cut a shot to give it the most "invisible" type of editing possible?
3. What is a jump cut? How do you hide it?
4. What is screen direction? How do you ensure that you maintain good screen direction?
5. How can you use exit/entrances to help you match the action in a sequence?
If you finish all of the above, open your movie file back up and try playing around with the audio setting. I'll give you a brief demonstration about audio in your iMovie files, including how to detach audio from your clip and how to have multiple layers of audio and adjust the various volumes.

Hello all!
If you need a little extra time for your brochure you can take the first 15-20 minutes to do that.
It's such a beautiful day out that it would be a shame to waste it all inside! We are going to go outside as a class with the cameras and take some photos around the area (and NOT disturb any gym classes) . You'll need to share a camera with 1 or 2 other people. After that we will come back in and we will do some editing in photoshop (there should be enough that we all get our own computer with photoshop). I'll show you the basic workflow for enhancing your photos, and a few other helpful photo editing tips that you can use. When you are done you can upload them to the blog.
Happy Friday!

Today I am going to conference with you one on one and give you feedback about your indesign brochure. You will then have time to make the changes to your brochure. If you are waiting for a conference, then keep working on your brochure to make it better.
If you happen to finish all of this, you can work on any old blog posts that you have missed (I'm specifically thinking about the video post about design and the questions that went with it).
If you finish all of the above, then you can have some free time on photoshop.

Hello!
Today I'd like you to start by finishing the design work from last class on your blog. Once the majority of people are finished this, I will introduce you to your final project for inDesign.
You have been asked to create a brochure for Rockway Mennonite Collegiate. It is a brochure that the school will give out to potential students. You may copy and paste text from the website, and use photos from the website as well. I will show you how to link these photos to insure the highest resolution possible. When creating your brochure, be sure to consider layout, composition, colour, etc.
On the brochure, you must include:
-Why attend Rockway

Hello!
Today you will have the first half of the class (until 2:50) to finish your magazine covers. Your covers must be exported and uploaded to your blogs as jpegs or PNGS by the end of this time period.
PART 2:
For the second half of the class, we are going to move to the other side of the room to allow the video people an opportunity to use photoshop video. You are going to a Design Scavenger Hunt online! You are going to find the best and the worst of design on the web. To start, please watch the following the video:
Design Council: What is Design?
This video was filled with a lot of great information. Please answer the following in your own words, not necessarily the words from the video.
1. What is your first impressions of the video? How did it make you rethink the world of design?
2. What area of design was the most interesting to you? Why is that?
3. What do you think is the important of brand identity? What does brand identity usually include?
Scavenger Hunt:
1. Please find 1 example of a poorly designed website and include a link, why do you think the website is poorly designed? Aesthetics, user-ability, etc.
2. Please find 2 examples of well designed websites and include a link, why do you think the website is well designed?
3. Please find an example of a well designed restaurant menu and an example of a poorly designed website menu. What are the differences between the two?
4. Can you think of an object that has been redesigned by a company such as the dyson vaccuum? List 3 of these, and what they did that was revolutionary for the product.

Hello!
Last class we created text portraits and they turned out great! If you're not done, quickly finish and EXPORT it as a jpeg or png. If you see a black line around the image where you traced, then go to your pentool and make sure that you don't have a black stroke selected.
Today we will do the following:
If you had your own magazine, what would it be about? What would be on the cover?
Using InDesign, design a magazine cover that looks as “real” as possible. You can duplicate an existing magazine or come up with your own original idea.
Include the magazine name, a picture or illustration and the usual text describing what’s inside the magazine (as well as a date/volume/issue number etc)
What are some things that all magazine covers have in common? Why do certain magazines look the way they do?
This site gives a detailed breakdown of some standard elements of magazine covers.
A google image search for “magazine cover” should provide plenty of inspiration.
Make it “Bleed” – the images on most magazine covers will go right over the edge of the page (in the design world this is referred to as a “bleed”). Make sure your images are large enough to roll off the edge of the page so there won’t be a border on your image.
Here is a great tutorial to get you started in inDesign:

Hello!
Today you will have the first part of class to finish your Envirathon/Servathon flyer challenge. When you are done, PLEASE save it as an inDesign file AND a PDF. I will take it on my USB from you. I must have the original file incase I need to do any reformatting for you.
After this I will give you a demo about text-wrapping and we will play with this feature for the remainder of the class.
For your own knowledge, here is a great youtube tutorial for understanding how text wrap works!

Hello all!
Today we are going to take a break from our tutorial and create a flyer for Envirathon/ Servathon! Go to the rockway website for a Q & A about the detail on this event. The flyer must be 8.5 x 11 and must include the title and the date, the rest is up to you! If you would like to use illustrator, you can create a text file in illustrator (save as png) and try placing it in your indesign file.
This will likely take you the entire class if you do the best job you can. Use dafont.com for more font choices. If you happen to finish, you can carry on with your tutorial.

Use drop caps
You can add drop caps to one or more paragraphs
at a time. The drop cap’s baseline sits one or more lines below
the baseline of the first line of a paragraph.
You can also create a character style that can be applied to the drop‑cap characters. For example, you can create a tall cap (also called a raised cap) by specifying a 1‑line, 1‑character drop cap and applying a character style that increases the size of the first letter.
You can also create a character style that can be applied to the drop‑cap characters. For example, you can create a tall cap (also called a raised cap) by specifying a 1‑line, 1‑character drop cap and applying a character style that increases the size of the first letter.
One-character, three-line drop cap (left), and five-character,
two-line drop cap (right)
Create a drop cap
- With
the Type tool
selected, click in the paragraph where you want the drop cap to appear.
- In the Paragraph panel or Control panel, type a number
for Drop Cap Number Of Lines
to indicate the number of lines you want the drop cap to occupy.
- For Drop Cap One Or More Characters
, type the number of drop cap characters you want.
- To apply a character style to the drop cap character,
choose Drop Caps And Nested Styles from the Paragraph panel menu,
and then choose the character style you created.
You can also use the Drop Caps And Nested Styles dialog box to align the drop cap to the text edge, reducing the amount of space on the left side of the drop cap, and adjust for drop cap letters with descenders, such as “g” and “y.” If you want to resize, skew, or change the typeface of the drop cap letter for added effect, select the letter or letters and make the formatting changes.

Hello Group 2!
Today we are starting our new module using inDesign. I'd like you to open up inDesign and respond to the following on your blog:
1. From your OWN observations, and NOT google, what does inDesign look like it is used for?
2. What are some similiarities and some differences between inDesign and illustrator/ photoshop?
3. Try using some of the tools on inDesign, were you able to create anything? What did you create?
After I get the other group started with videography, we will begin working through a tutorial as a class. Please DO NOT start this without me. The link is below for those of you that are absent today/ will be in the near future so that you can catch-up on your own time.

Hello!
Today if your last chance to edit your stop-motion video. Please work at this and make it your best creation yet! When you are finished, upload it to youtube and send me the link.
If you finish early you can do the following with our other module:
Today is a warm and overcast day-sounds like perfect photography weather!
In light of the great weather we've been having recently, let's get outside and shoot some great photos! I'd like everyone to take 3-5 GREAT photos (any subject matter is welcome) and then edit them on either photoshop or iphoto (your choice) and upload them to your blog today.
Remember a great photo consists of:
-good compositon (think rule of thirds)
-appropriate depth of field (aperture setting)
-is properply lit
-interesting colour, texture, space, etc.
Get out there and start shooting!
On Tuesday we will begin our new unit on inDesign.

Today is your final day for shooting your stop-motion video. Please finish this by the middle of class. Also note that if you will need to use your personal accounts in order to have access to your iMovie files since you can not save an in-progress video on the guest account, only an exported file. Today you will have time to work on the audio, do any photo adjustments you could like to do (iPhoto being the easiest) and then begin putting it together. I would like you to get a good start on this today and it will be due on Tuesday.

Hello and welcome back after the break!
If you didn't give me your vine yet, please e-mail me the link to that. I am not overly concerned with your audio this time, I would just like you to get this assignment in to me so we can move forward with a new topic and our final video.
In a small group of 2-3 you will brainstorm ideas for your final stop-motion project. For this project you will be marked on your photo quality, audio, transitions, and narrative. I would like you to think of an interesting and thoughtful narrative for this project. Please speak to me if you have an idea for your stop-motion which involves shooting in another part of the school. Today I'd like you to create a google doc proposal where you will list the following for your final video (length of approx. 45 seconds):
Group members:
Setting:
Supplies Needed:
Narrative (5 sentences) including a beginning, a conflict/climax, and a resolution:
Soundtrack:
Number of stills:
Potential Issues/Conflicts:
A list of 5 other ideas that your group generated:
Once you have finished, this, share your proposal with me and I'd like you to watch the following ted talk, and read the following 2 articles and formulate an indivdual response to the following:
The video and articles you read disucssed the topic of social media and it's potentially negative affects on Generation Y. In your opinion and experience, have you seen any of these affects? Do you agree or disagree that social media has a negative impact on our sense of relationships. Explain further? Do you agree or disagree that social media has a significant role in creating a narcissistic (preoccupation with self) generation? Your response should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs.

Hello and Happy Friday!
Yesterday you took all of your photos for your Vine (7 second video clip). Today you will import them into iMovie and do the adjustments requirement to turn your photos into an animation. Once you are happy with your clip, I'd like you to go to Share>Export movie and put it on to your desktop. From there, you will reopen the exported clip in iMovie as a condensed file. Then you will drag it down and create a loop for however many loops you would like the video to play (at least 3 times). Everyother clip will need to be "reversed". I will show you how to do this in class. For your vine, you may choose to edit your photos in iphoto first for a fun effect. Try making a B & W vine, an antique looking vine, high contrast, etc. The link below will show you how to edit one photo in iPhoto and apply it to all of your photos (a VERY useful thing to know how to do-i.e. if you took all of your photos in same lighting and they're underexposed).
iPhoto Editing
If you finish the above, try editing your photos again in a new way. This time, you can try adding audio and a title and credit slide, etc. This is your opportunity to have fun and explore the program.
Please upload the 2 versions of your video to youtube-I will give you a demonstration of this in class (the vine being the most important). Note that for the first video I'm not overly concerned that your video is second seconds, relooped. If it is slightly over this, that is okay. Please copy and paste the URL from both videos into an e-mail to me and send it to my school gmail account.
Yesterday you took all of your photos for your Vine (7 second video clip). Today you will import them into iMovie and do the adjustments requirement to turn your photos into an animation. Hello all!
Today you will work in small groups of 2 or 3 (depending on numbers...we have 4 cameras available) to create your own stop-motion vine. If you don't know what a vine is you must have been living under a rock for 2013-just kidding!
As a vine is no more than 7 seconds in length, you will need to take at least 70 photos to have a frame rate of 10 f/s. You can watch the following youtube clip for some inspiration and then you will get to planning. You will be filming these vines in B1 down the hall, or in the hallway just outside the class. Remember-think of a fun, unique concept for this video! Friday we will work on editing these videos and looping them.

Hello all!
I hope that you watched the stop-motion videos at home in your own time and answered the questions that were required. If not, you will need to do that for homework by Thursday.
Today we will work on "Part 2" from our last class blog. Please view the above post to see what we will be doing today. By the end of the day you will create a very brief stop-motion video using photobooth and iMovie. You must take at least 30 photos for your stop-motion to be effective. When you are done, you will need to export your movie as a movie go to Share > Export Movie> and choose 720. Then you can post your video on your blog. To do this, create a new blog post in your blogger account and then click on the movie icon at the top beside the photo icon.

Hello everyone and welcome back!
At the beginning of class I would like you to finish up any outstanding illustrator work that you have, and please upload it to your blog. Please upload the work to your blog as a jpeg or png file, and I will take any photos you can not submit (if saved as a PDF, etc.)
Part 1:
Today we will be starting a new module: stop-motion animation! This is a very fun module and will go quite quickly. We will learn about how to create stop-motion videos, what elements make a stop-motion video successful, and we will create our own stop-motion videos.
When you are finished, I'd like you to watch the following 3 short stop-motion videos. Then answer the following on your blog. Before doing this, I'll need a volunteer to go to the library to get an appropriate amount of headsets from Helmi. If you have never used one of the school headsets, after plugging it into the usb you must go to system preferences > sound> output you must choose the Microsoft life chat :
Post-it Notes by Deadline
Target Commercial
Strawberry Swing by Coldplay
1. Which video was your favourite? Why? Explain in at least 3 sentences.
2. What was a common successful element in all of the videos?
3. What other films have you seen that are stop-motion (or clay-mation). Have you heard of Tim Burtons? If you haven't you should know who he is....he is kind of a big deal, especially in the realm of stop motion animation. Look him up on wikipedia.
Part 2:
The video below is a behind the scenes look at the creation of the 2009 film, "Fantastic Mr. Fox". This video will give you an idea of the labour intense but fascinating world of stop-motion animation film. Can you think of any other films that you have seen that are stop-motion animation?
*Make sure that you blow the video up to full screen to watch.
Fantastic Mr. Fox Behind the Scenes
After you have watched this video, I will give you a demonstration on making a stop-motion video using iMovie. At the end of class, you will make your own mini-clip of a stop-motion animation video using photobooth and an inanimate object.

Last class we continue to practice our use of illustrator and you created a simple scene with rolling hills, a sky, tree, and possibly a simple character.
Today we are going to take our illustrations a step further and I'd like you to design your own cartoon character. For some inspiration, search "vector animal cartoon" into google images-they must be vectors!
I'll give you a brief demonstration on some new tools and then I'd like you to create your own. You will submit this to your blog for a mark so please do your best. You should also have your character placed in a background setting so consider the content.
You may use:
-pen tool
-shape tools
-blob brush
-paint brush
-gradients
-any other illustrator tool that you can find to experiment with.
If you finish early and upload your jpeg to the blog, try recreating a famous character in illustrator.

At the beginning of class, you can finish up some of your work from yesterday (uploading your photos, responding to the blog posts). When you are done, please work at the following:
Understanding Resolution
Read this post on Resolution by photographer Frank Phillips, and then answer the questions below on your blog.
Please cut and paste and questions into your blog first.
1. What is a pixel? What is a megapixel?
2. How many pixels would a 2048 x 1536 image produce? (Hint: use your calculator!) How many megapixels? (Hint: Round this number)
3. What are some advantages of having higher resolution images to work with? List three.
4.How many pixels per inch (ppi) does a computer monitor display? How many ppi does a printed image have?
5. What is the rule for calculating the print out size of an on-screen image?
Once you are done this, I'd like you to watch the following video about Bitmaps vs Vectors Vector Vs Bitmap and please answer the following:
1. To summarize, how do bitmap images work (and specifically, what is a pixel?)
2. Are there any positives or negatives with a bitmap file type? What are some of the typical file types that use bitmaps?
3. To summarize, how do vectors work?
4. What are vectors used for?
5. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using vectors?
When you are done...

Hello and welcome back!
On the 19th we had a smaller class and we discussed lighting briefly and looked at the school's light box. Today we will look at another light and I will do a brief demonstration using a bounce card and the fill light.
We will also talk about focusing with the cameras.
The class before that, you were asked to shoot using the manual setting, however many of your photos did not turned out as well as you had hoped (this is completely normal for your first time out with the cameras!) Today I'd like you to sign out a camera and for each student to take 3 of your best photos possible: this means....
- they are appropriately exposed
-the focus is on an appropriate subject
-they are not blurry
-they are well balanced (follow the rule of thirds or purposely do not...perhaps exact symmetry).
The topic for your photos are :
1. shadow
2. student life
3. a juxtaposition
I would like you to take 15 minutes taking these photos, come back and edit them in iphoto to the best of your ability and post them on your blog. Remember...submitting 3 photos means you would take more than 3!
Once you are done, research 3 local professional photographers in the area and provide links to their website on your blog (try to avoid photographers that exclusively shoot weddings and engagement shots). For each photographer, answer the following:
1. What is the photographer's main subject matter?
2. Do you like their work? Why or why not? Are they unique in any way?
