January 31st

Last class we continue to practice our use of illustrator and you created a simple scene with rolling hills, a sky, tree, and possibly a simple character.

Today we are going to take our illustrations a step further and I'd like you to design your own cartoon character. For some inspiration, search "vector animal cartoon" into google images-they must be vectors!

I'll give you a brief demonstration on some new tools and then I'd like you to create your own. You will submit this to your blog for a mark so please do your best. You should also have your character placed in a background setting so consider the content.

You may use:
-pen tool
-shape tools
-blob brush
-paint brush
-gradients
-any other illustrator tool that you can find to experiment with.

If you finish early and upload your jpeg to the blog, try recreating a famous character in illustrator.

January 28th

Hello and welcome back everyone!

It's been a long time since we had class last so I trust that you are all well rested and ready for a fresh start today as we begin a new module. The module that you will be starting today will be Adobe Illustrator!

1. Please finish your project from last class: put all of your edits (with descriptions of edits and photo information) on your blog, and I will come around and collect your original photos. Please make sure that you put all of your original photos on a folder on your desktop titled "Your Name Originals".

2. Once you are done,  we will watch the following videos as a group. (Please don't watch them by yourself to avoid the loud disruption).

What is Illustrator?

What are Vectors?

3. After the video please, answer the following on your blog in your own words:

  • 1. What is the difference between pixel graphics and vector graphics?
  • 2. What are the advantages of vector graphics?
  • 3. What types of industries do you think would your use illustrator? Do you think any industries would use illustrator more than photoshop?

4. After this video, I will give you a brief demonstration using the pen and pencil tool on illustrator. If you are finished your stop-motion video, you will practice drawing basic shapes in illustrator.

January 10th

At the beginning of class, you can finish up some of your work from yesterday (uploading your photos, responding to the blog posts). When you are done, please work at the following:

Understanding Resolution

Read this post on Resolution by photographer Frank Phillips, and then answer the questions below on your blog.
Please cut and paste and questions into your blog first.

1. What is a pixel? What is a megapixel?
2. How many pixels would a 2048 x 1536 image produce? (Hint: use your calculator!) How many megapixels? (Hint: Round this number)
3. What are some advantages of having higher resolution images to work with? List three.
4.How many pixels per inch (ppi) does a computer monitor display? How many ppi does a printed image have?

5. What is the rule for calculating the print out size of an on-screen image?

Once you are done this, I'd like you to watch the following video about Bitmaps vs Vectors Vector Vs Bitmap and please answer the following:

1. To summarize, how do bitmap images work (and specifically, what is a pixel?)

2. Are there any positives or negatives with a bitmap file type? What are some of the typical file types that use bitmaps?

3. To summarize, how do vectors work?

4. What are vectors used for?

5. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using vectors?

When you are done...

January 9th

Hello and welcome back!

On the 19th we had a smaller class and we discussed lighting briefly and looked at the school's light box. Today we will look at another light and I will do a brief demonstration using a bounce card and the fill light.

We will also talk about focusing with the cameras.

The class before that, you were asked to shoot using the manual setting, however many of your photos did not turned out as well as you had hoped (this is completely normal for your first time out with the cameras!) Today I'd like you to sign out a camera and for each student to take 3 of your best photos possible: this means....
                                 - they are appropriately exposed
-the focus is on an appropriate subject
                                 -they are not blurry
-they are well balanced (follow the rule of thirds or purposely do not...perhaps   exact symmetry).

The topic for your photos are :
            1. shadow
            2. student life
            3. a juxtaposition

I would like you to take 15 minutes taking these photos, come back and edit them in iphoto to the best of your ability and post them on your blog. Remember...submitting 3 photos means you would take more than 3!

Once you are done, research 3 local professional photographers in the area and provide links to their website on your blog (try to avoid photographers that exclusively shoot weddings and engagement shots). For each photographer, answer the following:

1. What is the photographer's main subject matter?

2. Do you like their work? Why or why not? Are they unique in any way?
