Before Class:
Last class we learned how to take photos using the Aperture Priority (AV) and Shutter Speed Priority (TV). Today we will talk about ISO, and shooting manually. We will also discuss the P setting on your camera (which does NOT stand for portrait). While you are waiting for class to start, research what the "P" stands for on cameras. I would also like you to look up what "ISO" stands for, and post it on your blog.

Part 2:
Today you will go out and take 5 photos shooting on the manual setting. You should adjust your ISO to an appropriate setting for your photo and you may use a tripod. I'd like you to take 5 photos that have a strong element of line. You can go anywhere inside the school except in a classroom, and you may not bother any classes that are in progress. After you have taken 5 good photos, bring them back and use iphoto to edit these and when you are finished, post them to your blog. With the photo, post the settings you used : F/8, 125th, ISO 800, etc.
Part 3: After you post your photos, please explain your experience shooting in manual (in approx. 5 sentences).

Happy Friday! Everyone's happy happy happy
Today we are going to look at what Aperture and Shutter Speed do in a camera! There are a lot of interesting mechanics inside a camera and in order to take great shots, we need to know how to use them-and use them correctly!
After the presentation you may sign out a camera and take 4 photos using the AV and TV modes on your camera:
1 photo of something that has a shallow depth of field (low aperture number). * Hint- do a close-up of something to achieve this.
1 photo of something that has a far depth of field (high aperture number). *Hint, something farther in the distance
1 photo of something using a slow shutter speed (it will likely turn out blurry-that's okay!)
1 photo of something using a fast shutter speed (this may turn out dark, that's okay too!)
B.)
Please respond to the following reflections:
1. Are you satisfied with how your photos turned out? Why or why not?
2. How did the fast vs slow shutter speed photos vary? Did you notice a difference
3. How did the DOF photos vary? Did you notice a difference?
C.)
If you are done all of this, you can open up iphoto and play with the editing features (exposure, saturation, tint, etc.) Have fun and see how creative you can get with your photos. Show me your photos when you are done!

Today we will be starting our unit on digital photography. We will start by looking at photography rule #1: The rule of thirds.

You are going to practise using the rule of thirds by CROPPING photos and improving their composition.
1. Click on each thumbnail to download the full size version of each photo.
2. Use iPhoto to crop each photo in TWO DIFFERENT WAYS using the rule of thirds. BE SURE TO USE THE THUMBNAIL VERSION OF THIS!
3. Upload your finished photos to your blog with the title "Rule of Thirds".

you have finished cropping the above photos, find 2 great example of
the rule of thirds using Google Image search and post them to your

better quality photos, go to advanced search-and change the image size
to a min of 1024 x 768. Instead of searching "rule of thirds" trying
looking up Ansel Adams or National Geographic for some great examples of
photos.
If you are finished everything, check out the National Georgraphic Website and under photography, look at their "photos of the days". Tell me which one if your favourite, and why (3 sentences).

Today we are going to take some time to explore Canadian Tech start-up
companies. We will read 2 articles, the first from the Globe and Mail
and the second from betakit.com
Part A:
Explore the following article from the Globe and Mail on promising Canadian internet Tech Startups.
This article describes six new companies and their products. Pick three that are interesting to you and answer the following question for EACH of your picks:
1. What is the name and location of this company?
2. Briefly describe the founder of the company. (e.g. How old are they? What education do they have? What did they do before they started this company?
3. What service/product does this company provide? Be sure to visit their website to get a solid idea - watch their promotional material, etc. In your opinion, how is there business a benefit to those who use it?
Part B:
Explore the following article from Beta Kit on 10 Canadian Start-ups to Watch
1. For 5 of the start-ups, go to their website and give a brief description of what they do, in your own words.
2. Do any of these start-ups have an effect on how we do day-to-day life? Do they simplify activities or do they just offer a fun new approach?
3. Which of the 10 had the most attractive and user-friendly website? What about it did you like?
Part C:
From the two articles, which of these services would you use personally? Why or why not? Do you already use any of them? Before reading this articles, how many of the 20 were you already aware of?

Today is our last day in photoshop! For our final project for the unit, your will complete 2 mini assignments in-class today.
1. Create a veggie tales inspired character.
You must create your own cartoon character out of multiple types of fruits and vegetables. You must have at least 6 layers in your project. Use the smudge tool, blur, clone stamp, etc. to create this. Your character must be in a new background
Emphasis will be placed on your use of the selection tool, the blend tool, and your use of the transform tool.
2. You must create a colour isolation and have one image in the photo the original colour, and another part of the image but be a new colour that you created. To do this you will need to use the selection and colour balance/hue and saturation tools.
Emphasis will be placed on your use of the selection tool, and the eraser tool.

Happy Monday!
Today we are going to do a mini-assignment that will be due at the end of class today.
Bueller's Day Off!
Your parents are away on vacation for the week and they decided that you were responsible enough to stay home alone for the week. You decided to "borrow" their car and you got in an accident and decided to hide the car in your garage until you can get it fixed. Your neighbour calls your parents on vacation and tells them they haven't noticed the car in the driveway. Your parents call and demand a recent photo of the car, and to make sure you're not lieing, they want you to be in the photo.
Take one of the photos and photoshop out the dents/scratchs. Use the clone tool, blur tool, dodge, burn, etc. Have someone in the class take a photo of you that you can add into the photo.

1. List 3 schools that offer the post-secondary education necessary to work in this area, for each one answer the following.
a.) What are the names, location, and program names
b.) What are the prerequisites for these programs
c.) What is the cost of tuition per year, and the total cost of the program
d.) What about their program makes them unique? Do they offer a co-op, etc.
e.) Are there additional costs such as tuition, ancillary fees, etc.
2. Now find 3 job postings for this area on job search engines such as monster, canada gov. job bank, workopolis, etc. Look for "entry level jobs" with approx. 3 years of experience.

Once you are finished the above you can catch up on some of your photography work or your photoshop work.

While you are waiting, you can continue editing a photo on photoshop the way that you learned on Thursday. Remember the basic workflow that we did last class (adjust the levels, colour balance, and vibrancy).

Hello and welcome to the first day of photoshop. Thank your for being patient will I teach the other section of the course first.
To start off the class, I'd like you to respond to the following questions on your blog as I teach the first half of the class. Please work on these quiet, and reflectively. If you finish these, make sure that you finished your blog reflections from Thursday that ask about the responses you received to your survey.
1. What are you looking forward to learning how to do in photoshop?
2. What have you heard are the common things photoshop can do, i.e. "oh, that's definitely photoshopped!" "Just photoshop me in the photo!"
3. Do you think there many be any ethical/social concerns when using an editing program like photoshop? What are these issues? Please answer in paragraph form. Consider advertising, marketing, etc. Are there copyright concerns? Self-esteem issues? Etc.

Today I will introduce you to a basic workflow that you can use for enhancing the overall balance of your images. This is a basic and handy thing to know how to do. We will start with the most important and work our way to the least important: Tonal Adjustments, Colour Balance, Vibrancy.
After the presentation, please edit 3 photos to improve their overall quality. Take your time with this activity and achieve the best version of the photo as possible. You can use your own photos or some from google images but at least one of your edited photos must be once that you took.
